Researchers at UC Berkeley have developed a framework called TRACE to identify regions of the human genome containing super-archaic DNA, which they believe was inherited through interbreeding with unidentified 'ghost species'. This study, led by postdoctoral
researcher Arjun Biddanda and graduate student Yulin Zhang, found that about 1% of the human genome contains DNA from these unknown lineages, which may have lived around a million years ago. The research suggests that these ghost species contributed to the genetic makeup of all modern human populations, not just those in Africa. The findings were published in the journal Science.
