What's Happening?
Pacific Fusion, a commercial fusion energy company, has selected New Mexico as the site for its $1 billion Research and Manufacturing Campus. The facility, located at Mesa del Sol, aims to achieve net facility gain by 2030, producing more energy from fusion reactions than consumed. This project is expected to create hundreds of jobs and position New Mexico as a leader in the fusion energy industry.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of Pacific Fusion's campus in New Mexico represents a significant investment in clean energy technology, potentially transforming the state into a hub for fusion energy research and development. This project aligns with New Mexico's strategic goals to expand its clean-tech economy and create high-quality jobs. The collaboration with state and local leadership, as well as national laboratories, underscores the potential for public-private partnerships in advancing energy innovation.
What's Next?
Construction of the facility is set to begin in 2026, with operations expected to launch before the end of the year. The project will bring over 200 long-term jobs and additional construction jobs to the state. Pacific Fusion's expansion is supported by state and local incentives, contingent on job creation and capital investment commitments.
