What's Happening?
RIU Hotels & Resorts has successfully obtained the ECOSTARS certification for all its operational hotels, marking a significant achievement in its sustainability efforts. This certification, recognized
by international and national tourism bodies, underscores RIU's commitment to responsible tourism. The certification process involved 98 hotels across 21 countries, excluding only newly opened establishments lacking consumption data. The ECOSTARS certification provides RIU with tools for environmental management, including the calculation of scope 3 carbon emissions and a comprehensive database of sustainability attributes. This milestone, achieved a year ahead of schedule, is part of RIU's Proudly Committed sustainability strategy, which aims to optimize energy and water consumption and enhance transparency with travel agencies and tour operators.
Why It's Important?
Achieving 100% ECOSTARS certification positions RIU Hotels & Resorts as a leader in sustainable tourism, potentially influencing industry standards and practices. This certification not only helps RIU reduce operating costs through improved resource management but also enhances its appeal to environmentally conscious travelers and markets with stringent sustainability requirements. The move aligns with growing global emphasis on ESG (environmental, social, and governance) criteria, which are increasingly important to investors, consumers, and regulatory bodies. By meeting these standards, RIU mitigates regulatory and financial risks associated with environmental management, potentially setting a benchmark for other hotel chains to follow.
