What's Happening?
Marea Therapeutics has presented promising Phase 1 data for MAR002, a new treatment for acromegaly, at the ENDO 2026 conference. Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder caused by excess growth hormone, leading to severe complications if untreated. MAR002, an
allosteric monoclonal antibody targeting the growth hormone receptor, demonstrated significant suppression of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) by up to 64%. This suppression could allow for dosing as infrequently as every two weeks, compared to the daily injections required by current treatments. The study showed MAR002 to be safe and well-tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported.
Why It's Important?
Acromegaly remains a condition with significant unmet medical needs, as less than 35% of patients achieve optimal disease control with existing therapies. MAR002's potential to offer a more convenient dosing schedule could improve patient adherence and outcomes. If proven effective in further trials, MAR002 could become a new standard of care, offering both efficacy and convenience. This development is particularly important for patients who struggle with the daily administration of current treatments, potentially improving their quality of life and disease management.
What's Next?
Marea Therapeutics plans to advance MAR002 into Phase 2/3 trials, expected to begin in mid-2026. These trials will further assess the drug's efficacy and safety in a larger patient population. Success in these trials could lead to regulatory approval and commercialization, providing a new treatment option for acromegaly patients. The company will continue to monitor the drug's long-term effects and potential for broader application in other growth hormone-related disorders.
