What's Happening?
Gage Pendergrass, a sophomore in the Graphic Design Technology Program at Meridian Community College (MCC), has won an annual T-shirt design competition focused on promoting flood awareness. His winning design features the slogan, 'Buy Flood Insurance:
Wash Away the Storm or Be Vigilant.' Pendergrass drew inspiration from an old-fashioned model house surrounded by rising floodwaters, aiming to depict the wavy movement of water during heavy rainfall. The design process took about a week, during which he experimented with different approaches and collaborated with his instructor to refine the artwork. The T-shirts bearing Pendergrass's design will be worn by members of Lauderdale County's Program for Public Information (PPI) Committee at community events to educate residents about flood risks and the importance of obtaining flood insurance. This competition is a long-standing annual project, providing MCC students with practical experience while strengthening the college's community ties.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is important for public safety and community resilience in areas prone to flooding. By engaging graphic design students in creating awareness campaigns, the program effectively communicates critical information about flood risks and the necessity of flood insurance to the public. Many residents may not consider their properties at risk, making such educational efforts vital for preparedness. The collaboration between MCC and the Lauderdale County PPI Committee serves as a model for how educational institutions can contribute to local public service initiatives. For students like Pendergrass, winning this competition offers valuable real-world experience, allowing them to apply their creative skills to a meaningful cause and build their professional portfolios. This hands-on experience is crucial for their career development, providing them with a tangible example of their design capabilities and their ability to meet client needs for public awareness campaigns.
What's Next?
The T-shirts featuring Gage Pendergrass's winning design will be utilized by the Lauderdale County PPI Committee at various community events to continue their flood awareness campaign. These events will aim to inform residents about potential flood risks and encourage them to consider purchasing flood insurance. Pendergrass, who is expected to graduate in May 2027, plans to incorporate this award-winning design into his professional portfolio as he pursues a career in graphic design and continues his education online for a bachelor's degree. The annual competition is expected to continue, fostering ongoing collaboration between Meridian Community College and local community organizations to address important public safety issues through creative design. Future competitions will likely continue to engage students in similar community-focused projects, providing them with practical experience and contributing to public awareness efforts.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate goal of flood awareness, this initiative highlights the broader role of community colleges in fostering civic engagement and practical skill development. By integrating real-world problems into academic curricula, institutions like MCC empower students to use their talents for the betterment of their communities. This approach not only enhances the students' learning experience but also strengthens the bond between the college and local government or non-profit organizations. The project also subtly addresses the challenge of communicating complex or often-ignored public safety messages in an accessible and engaging way. A well-designed T-shirt can serve as a mobile billboard, sparking conversations and disseminating information more effectively than traditional public service announcements. This demonstrates the power of visual communication in influencing public behavior and promoting preparedness for natural disasters, underscoring the ethical responsibility of designers to contribute to societal well-being.
