Thailand, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, has initiated a global effort to combat online scams, which are predominantly operated by criminal enterprises in Southeast
Asia. The initiative, named the Global Partnership Against Online Scams, was announced at a conference in Bangkok attended by representatives from Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru, and the United Arab Emirates. The partnership aims to enhance political commitment, law enforcement, victim protection, public awareness, and cross-border collaboration. Major internet companies, including Meta and TikTok, participated in the conference, highlighting the role of private sector partnerships in addressing the issue. TikTok, in particular, has joined the partnership and announced a new U.S. joint venture. The conference underscored the increasing use of artificial intelligence by scam networks and the need for a collective response to this growing threat.
