What's Happening?
The Bundestag's budget committee has approved funding for the procurement of Schakal Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) for Germany, as announced by the Federal Ministry of Defence. The Schakal IFVs, equipped
with the Puma IFV's turret and armed with Rheinmetall's MK 30-2/ABM cannon, are set for delivery between 2027 and 2031. The Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) has ordered 150 Schakals for Germany and 72 for the Netherlands, with an option for up to 248 more. The order, valued at EUR3.41 billion, includes logistics packages and options for advanced protection systems. The Dutch Ministry of Defence plans deliveries for the Netherlands in late 2028.
Why It's Important?
This procurement marks a significant enhancement in military capabilities for both Germany and the Netherlands. The Schakal IFVs are expected to become the main weapon system for Germany's new medium forces, providing increased firepower and defense capabilities. For the Netherlands, the IFVs will bolster the Royal Netherlands Army's 13 Light Brigade, enhancing its contribution to NATO's defense. The investment reflects a strategic shift towards modernizing military assets in response to evolving security challenges in Europe.
What's Next?
The delivery and integration of these vehicles will likely lead to increased military collaboration between Germany and the Netherlands. Both countries may engage in joint training exercises to maximize the operational effectiveness of the Schakal IFVs. Additionally, the procurement could prompt further investments in advanced military technologies and systems, aligning with broader NATO defense strategies.
