What's Happening?
David Edinger, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Colorado, is stepping down as the state undergoes a major IT restructuring. Edinger, who has served as CIO since November 2023, will be succeeded by Sarah Tuneberg, Deputy Executive Director for Digital
and Delivery. The restructuring aims to improve the delivery of government services by pairing technology teams with state agencies. This initiative includes reducing the OIT workforce by 173 employees and implementing a new operating model focused on outcomes and service to Coloradans.
Why It's Important?
The restructuring of Colorado's Office of Information Technology (OIT) reflects a broader trend towards modernizing government IT services to enhance efficiency and user experience. By aligning technology teams with state agencies, the state aims to address bureaucratic challenges and improve service delivery. Edinger's departure and Tuneberg's appointment signal a shift towards leadership with experience in modern delivery methods. This transition is crucial for ensuring that Colorado's digital government initiatives are effectively implemented and meet the needs of residents.
What's Next?
As Tuneberg takes on the role of CIO, she will lead the implementation of the state's Digital Government Strategic Plan. The focus will be on integrating technology into the fabric of state services and ensuring that the restructuring efforts lead to tangible improvements in service delivery. The state will also provide support to employees affected by the workforce reduction, including severance and resume coaching. The success of the restructuring will depend on the ability to balance innovation with the practical needs of state agencies and residents.
