What's Happening?
Northern Lithium has announced a partnership with Kurita and Evove to establish the UK's first commercial-scale lithium production using advanced Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology. The collaboration aims to commence production in County Durham
by 2027, initially producing 500 tonnes per year and scaling up to over 20,000 tonnes annually by 2035. This initiative is set to provide secure and sustainable lithium supplies to domestic and regional markets, reducing reliance on volatile global supply chains. The partnership follows successful field trials and extensive testing of saline brines from Northern Lithium's Northern Pennine Orefield catchment area.
Why It's Important?
The partnership marks a significant milestone in the energy transition for the UK and Europe, as it addresses the growing demand for lithium, a critical component in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage. The UK alone is projected to require over 80,000 tonnes of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) annually by 2035, with Northern Lithium potentially supplying 25% of this demand. The initiative is also driven by the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement's rules of origin, which incentivize regional battery manufacturing and supply chains. This development could significantly impact the economic landscape by fostering local production and reducing tariffs on electric vehicles.
What's Next?
Northern Lithium is moving forward with the detailed engineering and design phase for the commercial plants, with the first production units expected to be installed by 2027. The partnership is set to accelerate the commercialization of lithium extraction, leveraging Kurita's expertise in water treatment and Evove's advanced DLE technology. This collaboration aims to establish a sustainable resource supply system, contributing to a carbon-neutral society. The project is expected to play a crucial role in shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future by providing efficient and environmentally friendly lithium extraction solutions.
Beyond the Headlines
The partnership not only addresses immediate supply chain needs but also represents a commitment to environmental sustainability. By utilizing advanced DLE technology, the project aims to minimize environmental impact while maximizing efficiency. This approach aligns with broader global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and transition to renewable energy sources. The collaboration between Northern Lithium, Kurita, and Evove highlights the potential for international partnerships to drive innovation and sustainability in resource extraction.
