Medical Center, while prostate cancer remains the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men, most men diagnosed do not die from it. The PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test has returned as a standard starting point for screening, aiming to establish a healthy baseline and identify potential issues early. Screening timelines are now highly individualized, with discussions beginning around age 50 for average-risk men, age 45 for Black men and those with a family history, and between ages 40 and 45 for men with a known genetic predisposition like a BRCA mutation. A significant development is that an elevated PSA no longer automatically leads to a biopsy; instead, advanced MRI tests and new blood and urine biomarkers are used to determine if a biopsy is truly necessary. If a biopsy is recommended, technological advancements have made the procedure safer and more comfortable.
