What's Happening?
Construction has commenced on a long-awaited section of the Marquette Greenway Trail, a project years in the making. The new section will connect Burns Harbor to Porter, Indiana, and is part of a larger 60-mile trail linking Chicago to New Buffalo, Michigan.
The state is contributing $5 million towards the project, with the town of Burns Harbor providing over $3 million. The construction will include a boardwalk over swampy land and a crossing under a railroad bridge. The trail is expected to enhance recreational opportunities and connect communities within the Indiana Dunes National Park.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Marquette Greenway Trail is significant for regional connectivity and recreational access. Trails like this promote outdoor activities, improve quality of life, and can boost local economies by attracting tourists and encouraging spending in nearby communities. The project reflects a broader trend of investing in infrastructure that supports health and wellness, as well as environmental sustainability. The trail's completion will provide a continuous path for hiking and biking, linking urban and natural areas and fostering a greater appreciation for the region's natural beauty.
