What's Happening?
Cambodia's insurance industry reported a 9% increase in gross premiums, reaching $35.23 million in June 2026, compared to the previous year. This growth was driven by a 14.22% rise in general insurance premiums and a 5.20% increase in life insurance premiums.
Despite the increase in premiums, the total number of insurance policies saw a significant decline of 73.49%, dropping to 117,241 from 442,184. The sum insured, however, rose by 14.52% to $10.48 billion, indicating a higher value of coverage per policy. The industry also experienced a 13.60% increase in gross claims incurred, totaling $6.08 million.
Why It's Important?
The growth in Cambodia's insurance premiums, despite a decline in policy numbers, suggests a shift towards higher-value insurance products. This trend could indicate a maturing market where consumers are opting for more comprehensive coverage. The increase in the sum insured and claims also reflects a growing awareness and reliance on insurance for financial protection. This development is crucial for the financial stability of individuals and businesses in Cambodia, potentially leading to increased economic resilience. The insurance sector's growth could attract more investment and competition, further enhancing service quality and innovation.
