What's Happening?
FBC Manby Bowdler, a law firm based in the West Midlands, is expanding its referral network, Hub.Legal, across the UK. Acquired by Horizon Capital in November 2024, FBC aims to double its size within a year. Hub.Legal allows smaller firms to refer work to FBC, particularly when they lack the expertise to advise clients. The network also facilitates referrals from FBC to member firms, creating a two-way referral system. Over the past five years, Hub.Legal has referred legal work worth £3.1 million to FBC, with £300,000 paid in referral fees. The network currently includes around 70 West Midland law firms and plans to expand to the East Midlands, North, London, and the South. Hub.Legal offers free or discounted training and access to FBC's experts for second opinions on cases.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Hub.Legal is significant for smaller law firms that may lack the resources or expertise to handle certain legal matters. By joining the network, these firms can access a broader range of services and expertise, potentially increasing their competitiveness and client satisfaction. The two-way referral system ensures that work is distributed efficiently, benefiting both FBC and member firms. This model could serve as a blueprint for other law firms looking to expand their reach and support smaller practices. The initiative also highlights the ongoing consolidation in the legal market, with larger firms leveraging private equity backing to grow and innovate.
What's Next?
FBC Manby Bowdler plans to expand Hub.Legal at a rate of five law firms per month, starting with the East Midlands and moving to the North by the end of the year. The expansion will continue into London and the South next year. The firm will take a coordinated approach to the growth of both the network and its own operations. As the network expands, FBC will likely continue to refine its offerings, potentially adding more services and support for member firms. The success of this expansion could encourage other law firms to adopt similar models, further transforming the legal landscape.
