Arya Satheesh, an 18-year-old high school student from Letterkenny, Ireland, has gained international recognition for her invention, Eco Purge, a plant-based biodegradable plastic. This innovative material is designed to address the growing issue of microplastic
pollution by releasing specialized enzymes that degrade PET-derived microplastics in soil and water as it breaks down. Satheesh's invention earned her the European regional title at The Earth Prize 2026, a prestigious environmental competition for school students, along with a $12,500 award to further develop her prototype. Eco Purge stands out from other biodegradable plastics by not only decomposing naturally but also actively reducing existing plastic pollution.
