What's Happening?
Archaeologists from Costa Rica and Mexico are working together to restore ancient stone spheres at the Finca 6 Museum Site in Costa Rica. These pre-Columbian sculptures, attributed to the Diquís culture,
are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The restoration involves cleaning, stabilizing, and protecting the spheres, which are made from limestone and are vulnerable to environmental damage. This project is part of a decade-long partnership between Costa Rica's national museum and Mexico's conservation school.
Why It's Important?
The restoration of these stone spheres is crucial for preserving the cultural heritage of the Diquís culture, which is known for its unique sculptural traditions. The collaboration between Costa Rica and Mexico highlights the importance of international partnerships in heritage conservation. This project not only protects the spheres but also enhances understanding of the Diquís culture and its historical significance. The initiative supports cultural tourism and education, contributing to the local economy and cultural awareness.
