What's Happening?
Thales and Kongsberg have successfully conducted a live firing test of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) from the StrikeMaster missile launch vehicle in Norway. This test demonstrated the potential of StrikeMaster as a solution
for Australia's long-range strike needs. The NSM, a fifth-generation stealth cruise missile, is designed for maritime strike and land attack operations. The system will be constructed in Australia, involving over 150 local suppliers and creating approximately 700 jobs. The NSM is set to be manufactured at a new facility near Newcastle, with operations starting in 2027.
Why It's Important?
The successful test of the NSM from StrikeMaster represents a significant advancement in military capabilities, particularly for Australia. The development of this missile system within Australia not only enhances national defense capabilities but also supports local industry and job creation. The collaboration between Thales and Kongsberg highlights the importance of international partnerships in defense technology. This development could influence future military procurement decisions and strengthen Australia's position in regional security dynamics.
