Northern, a train operator, has issued updated travel advice for customers planning journeys over the New Year period and the first week of January. On New Year’s Eve, most trains will adhere to their
regular weekday schedules, with the last services running around 9 PM. However, buses will replace trains between Leeds and York/Selby due to ongoing improvement work on the line. On New Year’s Day, train services will commence later in the morning and follow the usual Thursday timetable, except in the North East. Northern will also operate a limited-stop special service for visitors to Whitby, with two fast trains running in each direction between Darlington, Middlesbrough, and Whitby. No other trains will operate in the North East on New Year’s Day. Throughout January, upgrade works will continue across the Northern network, leading to train diversions or bus replacements, particularly between Leeds and York as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade. Matt Rice, Northern's chief operating officer, advises customers to check their travel plans in advance due to these changes.
