What's Happening?
Focus Graphite Inc. has commenced a hydrogeological study at its Lac Knife Project in Quebec, aimed at eliminating mine drainage through a redesigned tailings system. The study, conducted by Richelieu
Hydrogeologie Inc., will assess groundwater flows and aquifer properties to ensure responsible water management and compliance with Quebec's regulatory standards. This initiative is part of the company's Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, a crucial step towards mine permitting. The redesigned tailings storage facility incorporates dolomitic marble to prevent acid mine drainage, addressing concerns from Quebec's Ministry of Sustainable Development.
Why It's Important?
The hydrogeological study is vital for advancing the Lac Knife Project, which hosts one of the highest-grade flake graphite deposits globally. By addressing environmental concerns and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, Focus Graphite aims to responsibly develop the project, supporting Canada's Critical Minerals Strategy. The study's outcomes will influence the project's feasibility and its ability to supply high-purity graphite for defense, battery, and advanced materials markets. Successful implementation could enhance the project's sustainability and contribute to the growing demand for ethically sourced graphite.
What's Next?
Focus Graphite plans to finalize contracting for additional studies, including tailings dam breach analysis and dust dispersion modelling. The results of the hydrogeological study are expected by February 2026, aligning with the submission of the final ESIA revision. The company continues to collaborate with IOS Geosciences to ensure all environmental and social considerations are addressed. As the project progresses, Focus Graphite remains committed to advancing Lac Knife in alignment with Indigenous and Quebec environmental standards.
