What's Happening?
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) in Jamaica, in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Regional Office for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean (IUCN ORMACC), has initiated the 'Restore for Sure'
project. This initiative aims to conserve Jamaica's endangered plant species and restore critical ecosystems that support them. The project, funded by a US$4.52 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with co-financing from the Government of Jamaica, targets at least 53 globally threatened plant species. Restoration work is planned across five conservation landscapes, covering over 740 hectares of priority areas, including Quaco Rock in Clarendon, Montpelier Ecologically Sensitive Area, Dolphin Head Forest Reserve, Long Mountain Ecologically Sensitive Area, and the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park. A recent workshop brought together government agencies, technical experts, community members, and international partners to advance the planning phase, with a detailed project document being prepared through a collaborative effort involving NEPA, IUCN ORMACC, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Anthony McKenzie, NEPA’s deputy chief executive officer, emphasized that ecosystem restoration is a national necessity for Jamaica, which is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot.

Stakeholders, including political leaders, businesses, and civil society groups, are expected to continue their collaborative efforts in the project preparation phase to develop a robust proposal. The focus will be on ensuring the project is grounded in national priorities, informed by the best available knowledge, and supported by strong partnerships to achieve its conservation goals. The implementation of restoration work across the five identified conservation landscapes will be a key next step, aiming to protect and restore the targeted endangered plant species and their ecosystems.
