The Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke has been renamed the Davis and McDaniel Veterans Care Center, honoring decorated fighter pilot and POW Capt. Eugene “Red” McDaniel and Medal of Honor recipient Col. Paris Davis. This renaming occurred in December
2023, with Governor Glenn Youngkin presiding over the dedication. Capt. McDaniel, a U.S. Navy aviator, endured nearly six years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam after being shot down in 1967. Following his release in 1973, he dedicated much of his civilian life to advocating for POW/MIA accountability and founded organizations like the American Defense Institute. McDaniel passed away on August 7 at the age of 94.
