What's Happening?
The Calexico City Council has approved a temporary fee schedule to reduce fees for planning applications and building permits. The new schedule aims to make fees more affordable for residents and business owners, addressing concerns over high costs established
by a 2009 fee study. The council also formed an ad hoc committee to explore a potential sales tax ballot measure for public safety services. Additionally, a budget amendment was passed to reallocate $76,573 for new fire department equipment. The fee schedule will be in place until June 30, 2029, allowing time for a new fee study.
Why It's Important?
The reduction in fees is significant for Calexico, a low-income community, as it aims to attract more businesses and ensure compliance with city codes. The initiative reflects efforts to rebrand Calexico as a business-friendly location, potentially boosting local economic growth. The ad hoc committee's exploration of a sales tax measure highlights the city's focus on enhancing public safety services amid regional growth and cross-border activity. The budget amendment supports the fire department's operational needs, ensuring readiness for emergency response.
