Two expanding grassroots initiatives are actively working to fill resource gaps in South Dakota schools, providing crucial support and experiences for students who might otherwise lack them. The Sioux Falls-based Promising Futures Fund, established in 2019
by Steve Hildebrand, is one such program. It has expanded its reach to Rapid City, supporting four elementary schools where 100% of students qualify for free and reduced lunches. In Sioux Falls, the fund aids 21 schools—14 elementary, three middle, and three high schools—with the highest poverty rates. The Promising Futures Fund offers a range of services including a Book-A-Month Club, field trips, family engagement nights, staff and teacher appreciation events, and post-graduate readiness workshops. Another program, Jobs for America's Graduates-South Dakota (JAG-SD), focuses on preparing students for post-graduate success. JAG-SD, an elective course in schools, identifies students facing multiple barriers to success and equips them with skills for college applications, resume building, job searching, and financial management. In the last academic year, 657 students participated in JAG-SD across 13 school districts.
