A new study published in the Gastro Hep Advances journal indicates a significant association between daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and an increased risk of developing gastric cancer in the U.S. population. Researchers from the Mass
General Brigham Cancer Institute found that individuals who consume at least one SSB daily face more than double the risk of gastric cancer compared to those who rarely drink them. This finding is based on decades of data collected from over 100,000 people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 63% of U.S. adults aged 18 or older consume SSBs, including regular soda, energy drinks, and juice with added sugars, at least once a day. While previous studies have linked SSBs to other cancers like colorectal, breast, and liver cancer, this is the first to establish a direct association with gastric cancer in a U.S. demographic. Gastric cancer, also known as stomach cancer, is the fifth leading cause of cancer death globally and is challenging to cure in advanced stages, according to the Mayo Clinic.
