What's Happening?
Pomona College in Claremont, California, has publicly launched its most ambitious fundraising effort to date, the '$530 million Originals Campaign.' This comprehensive campaign aims to significantly expand access to a Pomona education for exceptional
students, including those from middle-income families. A key component of this initiative is the groundbreaking for the new Center for Global Engagement (CGE). The campaign has already secured 47% of its goal and is projected to continue over the next five years. The funds raised will be allocated to strengthening and expanding financial aid, investing further in faculty and emerging areas of scholarship, enhancing health and wellness programs, and deepening connections across generations of Pomona College alumni, referred to as Sagehens. President G. Gabrielle Starr emphasized that the campaign is designed to ensure Pomona remains a place where students can thrive regardless of their financial circumstances and where faculty can redefine liberal arts education.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is important as it directly addresses the critical issue of college accessibility and affordability in the U.S. By focusing on expanding financial aid, particularly for middle-income families, Pomona College is working to dismantle financial barriers that often prevent talented students from pursuing higher education. This initiative could serve as a model for other institutions grappling with similar challenges, potentially influencing broader trends in higher education funding and access. The investment in faculty, scholarship, and health programs also underscores a commitment to holistic student development and academic excellence, which can elevate the quality of education and research at the college. Furthermore, the emphasis on deepening connections among alumni highlights the long-term value of a strong institutional community and its role in supporting future generations of students.
What's Next?
Over the next five years, Pomona College will continue its fundraising efforts for the 'Originals Campaign' to reach its $530 million goal. The construction of the Center for Global Engagement will proceed following its groundbreaking. The college will also implement the expanded financial aid programs, including the new middle-income initiative, and enhance support for existing programs like the Technology Access Program (TAP) and Access to Course Essentials (ACE). These programs provide essential resources such as laptops and course materials to ensure all students have the tools needed to succeed. The college will likely engage its community, including the 10,000 donors who have already contributed, through various events and volunteering opportunities to foster continued support for the campaign's objectives.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Originals Campaign' at Pomona College reflects a broader societal discussion about equity and opportunity in higher education. By prioritizing access for first-generation and middle-income students, the college is not only addressing immediate financial needs but also contributing to greater social mobility and diversity within its student body. This commitment to inclusivity can foster a richer academic environment, bringing varied perspectives and experiences to the campus. The campaign's focus on health and wellness programs also acknowledges the increasing importance of mental and physical well-being in academic success, a growing concern across U.S. educational institutions. Ultimately, this initiative could influence how liberal arts colleges define their mission in an evolving educational landscape, emphasizing both academic rigor and social responsibility.
