Maine's public water and wastewater systems are enhancing their cybersecurity measures in response to a wave of cyberattacks affecting similar systems in other U.S. states. Despite no reported incidents in Maine, local utility operators are taking proactive

The Portland Water District, the state's largest public water utility, has invested in cybersecurity through technology upgrades, employee training, and partnerships with state and federal agencies. This comes after a $20,000 state water security grant was used in 2024 to review cybersecurity policies and procedures. The vulnerability of U.S. water systems is largely due to the integration of internet-connected equipment, which hackers exploit using weak or default passwords.
