The University of Michigan has introduced a redesigned calculus course, ROB 201: Calculus for the Modern Engineer, aimed at better connecting mathematical concepts with real-world engineering applications. Developed by Jessy Grizzle, a professor of robotics,
the course integrates elements of Calculus I and II and differential equations with programming and robotics projects. Unlike traditional calculus courses that often begin with differentiation, ROB 201 starts with integration, using real drone data to calculate trajectories. The curriculum also pairs traditional pencil-and-paper exercises with computational problems that students solve using computer programming, specifically in Julia. This approach exposes students to the complexities of engineering challenges, where data can be noisy and solutions less straightforward. The course was first offered in 2024, and its development was driven by student feedback indicating a disconnect between abstract math learning and its practical application in engineering.
