What's Happening?
Penguin Random House (PRH), in collaboration with United for Libraries, has announced a new grant initiative aimed at supporting small and rural libraries across the United States. The program will distribute a total of $25,000 in grants, with individual
awards ranging from $500 to $1,000. Additionally, in-kind book donation grants valued at $500 will be provided to 20 libraries for the purchase of PRH titles. The grants are intended to assist Friends of Library groups with priority projects. Eligible libraries must serve a legal service area population of 25,000 or less and be located within the 50 states, District of Columbia, or U.S. territories. Libraries that are in the process of forming a Friends group are also eligible. The initiative includes complimentary eLearning opportunities and access to United for Libraries Learning Live webinars, as well as registration for the Friends of the Library Day virtual conference and retreat.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the challenges faced by small and rural libraries, which are often underfunded and serve as crucial community hubs. By providing financial and educational support, the program aims to strengthen these libraries' ability to offer essential services and resources. The grants come at a time when libraries are increasingly important in promoting literacy and access to information, especially as the freedom to read faces challenges nationwide. The support from PRH and United for Libraries could help these libraries not only maintain but enhance their services, benefiting communities that rely heavily on them for educational and cultural enrichment.
What's Next?
Applications for the grants will open on December 17, 2025, and close on January 21, 2026. Libraries and Friends groups interested in applying will need to demonstrate their eligibility and the impact the grant would have on their community. Successful applicants will be notified by March 30, 2026. As the program unfolds, it is expected that other stakeholders in the publishing and library sectors may take note and potentially develop similar initiatives to support libraries facing similar challenges.
