The global clean energy transition is giving rise to a new investment frontier focused on the recovery of valuable materials from retired solar panels. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) warns that without the development of recycling infrastructure
and circular economy policies, the solar industry risks creating a new environmental challenge. However, the end-of-life solar panels present a multi-billion-dollar market opportunity in recycling, critical minerals, and green infrastructure. IRENA projects that by 2050, cumulative solar PV waste will exceed 200 million tonnes, with annual waste generation rising above 25 million tonnes.

The emergence of a solar waste economy is significant as it addresses the environmental impact of solar panel disposal while creating economic opportunities. The recovery of materials such as glass, aluminum, silicon, copper, and silver from retired panels could generate over $20 billion annually by 2050. Governments are expected to strengthen regulations through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and other policies to support recycling efforts. The solar industry is encouraged to design panels that use fewer materials and develop viable second-hand markets. As the global fleet of solar panels ages, there is a limited window for governments and businesses to prepare for increased waste volumes. Innovation, digital tracking systems, and international cooperation will be critical in building a sustainable market for solar waste recycling.
