What's Happening?
India's power ministry has announced the development of nearly 47 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support the country's rapid expansion of renewable energy. As of June 30, 16 GW of BESS capacity is under construction, 12 GW has been awarded,
and 19 GW is at the tendering stage. Additionally, 16 GW of pumped storage projects are under construction, with another 7 GW awaiting construction. The National Electricity Plan projects a need for 47 GW of battery storage and 27 GW of pumped storage by 2031-32. The ministry estimates that approximately Rs 4.8 lakh crore will be required for energy storage infrastructure by 2031-32, with Rs 3.5 lakh crore for battery storage and Rs 1.3 lakh crore for pumped storage. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate renewable energy, meet peak electricity demand, and ensure grid reliability.
