What's Happening?
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has launched the Institute for Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IAAI). This new hub aims to apply AI to global food security
challenges, particularly benefiting smallholder farmers in climate-vulnerable regions. The institute, established in collaboration with the UAE Presidential Court and the Gates Foundation, will provide AI-powered tools, training programs, and technical assistance to improve the livelihoods of over 43 million smallholder farmers. The IAAI will focus on translating advanced AI research into practical agricultural services, such as real-time advisory on crops, pests, soil conditions, and weather patterns.

The launch of the IAAI is crucial as it addresses the pressing need for innovative solutions to enhance food security and climate resilience. By leveraging AI, the institute aims to improve decision-making at the farm level, thereby increasing productivity and sustainability. What's Next?
The IAAI plans to build an open-access agricultural data infrastructure to support the safe training of AI models. It will also develop multimodal diagnostic models for crop disease detection and voice-based advisory systems. The IAAI Academy will train over 200 experts to operate and scale AI-driven advisory systems. As the institute progresses, it is expected to foster cross-sector collaboration and applied learning, positioning AI-focused universities as key players in addressing global food security challenges. The initiative will likely influence future policies and investments in AI and agriculture, promoting sustainable development and economic growth.
