What's Happening?
China has achieved a new record in grain production, reaching approximately 714.9 million tonnes in 2025, despite facing challenges such as drought, flooding, and prolonged rainfall. This marks an increase of 8.4 million tonnes from the previous year,
as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The Vice Minister, Zhang Xingwang, highlighted that the majority of this growth was due to successful autumn harvests, which contributed over 90% to the annual increase. The northeastern provinces, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang were significant contributors, accounting for nearly 70% of the national growth. Corn production played a dominant role, making up about 75% of the total growth. Additionally, soybean output remained above 20 million tonnes for the fourth consecutive year, and the combined output of pork, beef, mutton, and poultry increased by 4.2% year-on-year.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it underscores China's resilience and capability to maintain and even increase agricultural output despite adverse weather conditions. The increase in grain production supports China's food security and rural economic stability. The adoption of advanced agricultural technologies, such as smart farming and mechanization, has been pivotal in achieving these results. This progress not only boosts local employment but also contributes to rural income growth and revitalization. The steady agricultural development aids in poverty alleviation efforts, ensuring stable employment for millions and improving living conditions in rural areas.
What's Next?
Looking forward, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs plans to accelerate agricultural and rural modernization. Efforts will focus on stabilizing grain and key agricultural product supplies, enhancing agricultural scientific and technological innovation, and improving rural living environments. The ministry also aims to prevent large-scale poverty relapse and promote rural reforms to sustain development momentum. These initiatives are expected to further strengthen China's agricultural sector and support rural communities.
