A new study from the University of Georgia (UGA) has identified centipedegrass, a common turfgrass in the Southeast, as a significant food source for bees. Researchers found that adult bees not only collect pollen from centipedegrass for themselves but
also bring it back to their hives to feed their offspring. This discovery is particularly important because centipedegrass provides pollen well into September, a period when many traditional floral food sources for bees become scarce. The study, co-authored by Shimat Joseph, an associate professor in the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and published in the Journal of Insect Conservation, suggests that managing lawns to allow grass to flower, even by skipping just one mowing, can offer an additional food source for bees. The research involved gathering over 150 foraging bees of 28 different species from yards across Georgia to evaluate their pollination behaviors.
