What's Happening?
Scott County Auditor Kerri Tompkins has announced an Administrative Audit for three precincts following intermittent issues with DS200 machines during the 2026 General Election. The affected precincts are D22 (Seventh Day Adventist School), D54 (YWCA),
and B53 (TBK Sports Complex). The issues involved machines generating a Ballot Reject Code. An ES&S representative worked with auditor staff on the machines throughout election day. While the results may be accurate, the audit aims to confirm their validity. ES&S will conduct a thorough investigation into the machines to determine the cause of the Ballot Reject Code. The audit is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, at 1:00 p.m. at the Training Center, 4715 Tremont Avenue in Davenport, on the 2nd floor. Public attendance is permitted, pending approval from the Scott County Board of Supervisors at their meeting on November 5 at 11:30 a.m.
Why It's Important?
This administrative audit is crucial for maintaining public trust in the electoral process, particularly concerning the reliability of voting equipment. Issues with ballot reject codes can raise questions about the accuracy and integrity of election results, potentially leading to voter skepticism and challenges to outcomes. By conducting a transparent audit and involving ES&S in a thorough investigation, Scott County aims to address these concerns proactively. The public's ability to observe the tabulating process further enhances transparency and accountability. Ensuring that voting machines function correctly and that any anomalies are investigated and explained is vital for upholding democratic principles and the perceived fairness of elections in the U.S.
What's Next?
The administrative audit will proceed on Thursday, November 5, at 1:00 p.m., provided the Scott County Board of Supervisors grants approval at their 11:30 a.m. meeting. Following the audit, ES&S will conduct a detailed investigation into the DS200 machines to identify the root cause of the Ballot Reject Codes. The findings from both the audit and the ES&S investigation will be critical in determining if any adjustments to election procedures or equipment maintenance are necessary for future elections. The public will likely await the results of these investigations to ensure the integrity of the 2026 General Election in Scott County.
Beyond the Headlines
The incident highlights broader challenges in election administration, particularly the reliance on technology and the need for robust oversight. The occurrence of ballot reject codes, even if intermittent, underscores the importance of continuous testing, maintenance, and contingency planning for voting equipment. This situation could prompt discussions about the procurement and deployment of voting machines, the training of election staff, and the protocols for handling technical malfunctions on election day. It also reinforces the role of county auditors in ensuring election integrity and the value of public observation in fostering confidence in democratic processes, potentially influencing best practices for election audits nationwide.
