What's Happening?
Flossmoor Veterans Memorial Inc. has developed an educational program called the 'Time Machine' to engage students with the history of local veterans. This initiative, now in its second year, involves seventh and eighth graders from Infant Jesus of Prague
School and Parker Junior High. The program, which began in October 2024, is a weeklong curriculum that combines historical research with personal storytelling. Students learn about the service and sacrifices of community veterans through primary sources, photographs, and personal histories. The program has been recognized with the Illinois State Historical Society's 2025 'Best of Illinois History' award for its innovative approach to public and educational programming. Students participate in activities such as researching veteran tributes, interviewing family members, and creating projects that reflect their vision for a future Veterans Memorial.
Why It's Important?
The 'Time Machine' program is significant as it fosters a deeper understanding of history among students by connecting them with the personal stories of local veterans. This approach not only enhances educational engagement but also promotes civic awareness and community involvement. By learning about the contributions and sacrifices of veterans, students gain a personal connection to history, which can inspire future community leadership. The program also highlights the importance of preserving local history and honoring those who have served, thereby strengthening community ties and fostering a sense of pride and responsibility among the younger generation.
What's Next?
The projects created by students as part of the 'Time Machine' program are currently on display at the Flossmoor Public Library until May 31. Community members are invited to vote for the best interpretation of Flossmoor's future Veterans Memorial, with voting open until May 20. The results will be announced on May 21, with the winning class receiving a pizza party and the second-place class enjoying treats from a local ice cream shop. This community involvement not only supports the students' efforts but also encourages broader public engagement with local history and the veterans' stories.
