What's Happening?
The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon has launched the nation's first undergraduate program in child behavioral health. This initiative aims to expand equitable access to behavioral health support for children
and families by training behavioral health providers, advancing research, and strengthening community capacity. The program is designed to lay the foundation for a credentialed bachelor's-level behavioral health profession grounded in evidence-based practices. The institute, made possible by a significant donation from Connie and Steve Ballmer, is located on the UO Portland campus. The Clinical Training Program Coordinator position is a key role in managing the institute's clinical training, field placement, and professional learning programs, ensuring compliance with university policies and accreditation standards.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of this undergraduate program is significant as it addresses the growing need for trained behavioral health professionals who can provide support to children and families. By creating a model that can be scaled nationally, the Ballmer Institute is setting a precedent for other educational institutions to follow. This initiative not only enhances the educational landscape but also contributes to the broader societal goal of improving mental health services and accessibility. The program's focus on evidence-based practices ensures that graduates are well-equipped to meet the demands of the field, potentially leading to better outcomes for children and families in need of behavioral health support.
What's Next?
The Ballmer Institute will continue to develop and refine its programs, with the Clinical Training Program Coordinator playing a crucial role in overseeing the daily administration and operations. As the program grows, it is expected to form partnerships with community organizations and healthcare providers to enhance field placement opportunities for students. The success of this program could lead to similar initiatives at other universities, further expanding access to behavioral health education and services across the country. Additionally, the institute may explore opportunities to influence policy and advocate for increased funding and support for behavioral health initiatives at the state and national levels.
