What's Happening?
Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has commenced the construction of the Finnish Navy's third and fourth Pohjanmaa-class corvettes. The keel for the third vessel was laid, and construction of the fourth began in mid-January 2026. This development is part
of Finland's Squadron 2020 project, which aims to enhance the naval capabilities of the Finnish Navy. The first corvette, FNS Pohjanmaa, is currently in the outfitting phase following its launch in May 2025, while the second vessel is nearing hull completion. The project represents a significant investment in Finland's naval infrastructure, marking the first time since 2006 that such vessels are being built domestically. RMC has industrialized its procedures to meet the demands of these projects, which are expected to provide 3,600 person-years of direct employment and require an additional 100 staff, increasing the workforce by 25%.
Why It's Important?
The construction of these corvettes is crucial for Finland's national defense strategy, enhancing its naval capabilities and ensuring year-round operations in icy conditions. The project not only strengthens Finland's maritime defense but also stimulates the local economy by creating thousands of jobs and requiring significant investment in domestic shipbuilding capabilities. This initiative reflects Finland's commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in the Baltic Sea region, a strategic area given the current geopolitical climate. The investment in local shipbuilding also underscores Finland's focus on self-reliance in defense manufacturing, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
What's Next?
As the construction progresses, RMC will continue to expand its workforce to meet the demands of the Squadron 2020 project. The Finnish Navy is expected to integrate these new corvettes into its fleet, enhancing its operational capabilities. The completion of these vessels will likely lead to further investments in naval technology and infrastructure, potentially influencing defense policies and procurement strategies in Finland and neighboring countries. The successful delivery of these corvettes could also position RMC as a competitive player in the international shipbuilding market.
