What's Happening?
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has initiated its Digital, AI and Innovation Internship: Global Call for 2026. This program offers students and recent graduates worldwide an opportunity to gain practical experience in artificial intelligence,
digital transformation, data governance, innovation, and sustainable development. The internship is hosted by UNDP’s Digital, AI and Innovation (DAI) Hub, a global platform dedicated to assisting countries in leveraging emerging technologies and innovative approaches to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As the development arm of the United Nations, UNDP operates in over 170 countries and territories, addressing critical global challenges such as poverty, climate change, governance, inequality, and sustainable economic growth. The internship is fully remote, allowing participants to contribute to international development initiatives from any location globally. The application window is open until September 30, 2026, with flexible start dates throughout the year.
Why It's Important?
This global internship program is significant as it directly addresses the growing demand for expertise in digital technologies and artificial intelligence within the context of sustainable development. By providing hands-on experience in these critical areas, UNDP is fostering a new generation of professionals equipped to tackle complex global challenges. The remote nature of the internship democratizes access, enabling talent from diverse geographical locations to participate and contribute to international development efforts. This initiative also strengthens UNDP's capacity to support countries in achieving the SDGs by integrating cutting-edge digital solutions. The focus on data governance and ethical AI development is crucial for ensuring that technological advancements are used responsibly and inclusively, benefiting all segments of society and preventing potential negative impacts.
What's Next?
Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications through the official UNDP Careers platform and complete a required Airtable application form before the September 30, 2026 deadline. The selection process will be on a rolling basis, with successful candidates potentially being contacted between April and the end of 2026, depending on organizational needs and internship availability. Beyond the Headlines
The UNDP's emphasis on digital transformation and AI in its development initiatives highlights a broader global trend: the increasing recognition of technology as a powerful enabler for sustainable development. This internship not only provides practical skills but also cultivates a global network of professionals committed to leveraging technology for social good. The program's remote structure could serve as a model for future international collaborations, demonstrating how geographical barriers can be overcome to foster talent and drive progress. Furthermore, by focusing on data governance and ethical considerations within AI, UNDP is implicitly addressing the complex ethical and societal implications of advanced technologies, aiming to ensure that their deployment is equitable and beneficial for all, particularly in developing nations. This proactive approach is vital for shaping a future where technology serves humanity's best interests.
