What's Happening?
John Steinmark, Program Manager for Frankfurt Calling, is spearheading the Young Voices Network, an initiative designed to connect emerging writers, publishers, and cultural actors across borders. This network aims to address the challenges faced by young
voices in the publishing industry, particularly in the context of political and cultural pressures. The initiative was highlighted at the World Expression Forum 2026, where discussions centered on the erosion of democratic institutions and the role of publishers in maintaining civic space. The network plans to map existing initiatives, share resources, and foster collaboration among young professionals in the industry.
Why It's Important?
The Young Voices Network is crucial in fostering a new generation of writers and cultural actors who can navigate and challenge the current political landscape. By providing a platform for collaboration and resource sharing, the network empowers young voices to contribute to public discourse and resist the spread of disinformation. This initiative is particularly important as it seeks to counteract the influence of reactionary political actors who have co-opted the language of freedom to undermine democratic institutions. The network's efforts to connect and support young professionals can lead to a more resilient and diverse publishing ecosystem.
What's Next?
The Young Voices Network plans to conduct a mapping exercise to identify and link existing initiatives across Europe and beyond. It will also establish a newsletter to disseminate opportunities and information from partner organizations. A dedicated session at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2026 is also planned to further these goals. These steps aim to create a cohesive network that can effectively support and amplify the voices of emerging writers and cultural actors, ensuring their contributions to the global dialogue on democracy and freedom.
