What's Happening?
The Huntington Beach City Council has approved a $1.3-million completion bond for the construction of a new restaurant, Huntington’s On The Pier. This decision allows the project, which has been in development for nearly five years, to move forward. The restaurant will
be located halfway down the Huntington Beach Pier and will offer both indoor and outdoor dining options. The project was initially backed by the council in 2021, and a 19-year lease with options for three 10-year extensions was approved in October 2024 for Surf City Partners, LLC. The completion bond ensures that the restaurant will be finished even if the developers default on the project. Former Huntington Beach Mayor Keith Bohr, along with business partner Jeff Bergsma, is leading the project. The restaurant is expected to open by August, coinciding with the U.S. Open of Surfing.
Why It's Important?
The approval of the completion bond is a significant step in revitalizing the Huntington Beach Pier area, potentially boosting local tourism and the economy. The new restaurant is expected to attract both locals and visitors, enhancing the pier's appeal as a dining and leisure destination. The project also represents a long-term investment in the community, with a lease agreement that could last up to 50 years. This development could lead to increased foot traffic and business opportunities in the area, benefiting local businesses and the city's economy. However, the project has faced delays and scrutiny, highlighting challenges in municipal planning and development processes.
What's Next?
With the bond approved, construction is set to begin with the demolition of the old Let’s Go Fishing building in early February. The developers aim to complete the restaurant by August, aligning with the U.S. Open of Surfing. The project will require continued coordination with city and state agencies, including the California Coastal Commission. The city council will monitor the project's progress to ensure it stays on track. The restaurant's opening could lead to further developments and investments in the pier area, potentially transforming it into a more vibrant community hub.
