What's Happening?
The Knesset has passed an amendment to the Police Ordinance requiring that water cannons used at demonstrations must utilize clean water only, without any additives such as dye or odor. This legislative change mandates that every use of water cannons be
documented with audiovisual recordings, which must include both image and sound of appropriate quality. These recordings are to be stored in police databases for a minimum of one year. This move aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of force during public demonstrations.
Why It's Important?
This legislation is significant as it addresses concerns about the use of force by law enforcement during protests, a topic that has been contentious in many countries. By mandating the use of clean water and requiring documentation, the law seeks to prevent potential abuses and ensure that police actions are transparent and accountable. This could lead to increased public trust in law enforcement and potentially reduce tensions during demonstrations. The requirement for audiovisual documentation also provides a mechanism for oversight and review, which could be crucial in cases of alleged misconduct.
