What's Happening?
A landmark conservation deal has been finalized in Maine, protecting 78,000 acres of forest in north Oxford County. The Magalloway Collaborative, comprising the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust, Forest Society of Maine, Northeast Wilderness Trust, and The Nature
Conservancy, secured $55 million to purchase development rights from Beyroot LLC, an investment company linked to Yale University. The land is divided into three zones: a working forest, a wilderness preserve, and a public recreation area. This initiative supports sustainable forestry while preventing developments like wind farms and vacation camps. The project contributes to Maine's goal of conserving 30% of its land by 2030, with current protection at 22.5%.
