What's Happening?
The Fiji National University (FNU) is expanding its educational offerings with the introduction of three new diploma programs in agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. These programs will be available at the university's
campuses in Ba, Nadi, and Labasa starting in 2026. The new courses include a Diploma in Aquaculture, a Diploma in Animal Husbandry, and a Diploma in Agriculture. These programs are designed to provide students with practical, hands-on experience, such as ornamental fish farming and farm tours, aimed at equipping them with skills for sustainable food production and income generation. The initiative reflects FNU's commitment to sustainable development and making education accessible to youths across Fiji.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of these diploma programs is significant for Fiji's economic and social development. By focusing on agriculture and fisheries, FNU is addressing critical areas that can enhance food security and create employment opportunities, particularly for women and young people. The programs also support Fiji's tourism sector by promoting environmentally responsible practices and aquaculture-linked activities. This educational expansion aligns with global trends towards sustainable development and can contribute to the long-term economic resilience of Fiji's rural and coastal communities.
