What's Happening?
Sapper, an 8-year-old Alaskan husky, has been named the USO's 2026 Canine Volunteer of the Year. Owned by Army veteran Mike D'Arcy, Sapper greets nearly 13,000 service members and families each month at the USO Center on Fort Bragg. The award was decided
by a public vote among five finalists from USO centers worldwide. Sapper is known for his friendly demeanor, often shaking hands and providing comfort to soldiers and their families. He also attends deployment ceremonies and homecomings, offering support to both soldiers and their families. Sapper's presence is a familiar and comforting sight in the Fayetteville, N.C., community, where he participates in local parades, schools, and veteran events.
Why It's Important?
Sapper's recognition highlights the significant role therapy animals play in supporting the mental and emotional well-being of military personnel and their families. The USO's Canine Program underscores the importance of non-human support systems in military communities, providing comfort and a sense of normalcy. Sapper's interactions with soldiers and their families help alleviate stress and foster a supportive environment. This award not only honors Sapper's contributions but also raises awareness about the therapeutic benefits of animals in high-stress environments like military bases.
