What's Happening?
Uzbekistan is collaborating with the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) to advance sustainable agriculture in arid and saline-prone regions. This partnership, supported by the Abu Dhabi
Fund for Development, focuses on developing sustainable agricultural systems in the degraded areas of Karakalpakstan. Over 1,500 farmers have been trained and provided with seeds of salt- and drought-tolerant crops. The initiative also includes the creation of the Central Asian Center for Ecology and Environment Research, which aims to build a digital database for ecological data and develop strategies for natural resource management. The collaboration is part of Uzbekistan's broader ecological reforms, including the transformation of its Ministry of Ecology into the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is significant as it addresses the pressing issues of desertification, soil salinization, and water scarcity in Uzbekistan, particularly in the Karakalpakstan region. By focusing on sustainable agriculture, the initiative aims to restore degraded lands and strengthen food systems, which are crucial for the region's economic stability and food security. The project also highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling environmental challenges and promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices. The establishment of a research center further underscores the commitment to scientific approaches in managing natural resources and adapting to environmental changes.
