What's Happening?
MSC Cruises has connected to shore power for the first time in New York with the MSC Meraviglia at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. This connection allows the ship to switch off its engines, reducing local
emissions and improving air quality while docked. MSC Cruises has been equipping its fleet with shore power capabilities since 2017, and currently, 16 out of 23 ships are equipped, with plans to increase this number by the end of the year.
Why It's Important?
The use of shore power by MSC Cruises in New York represents a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of cruise ships. By connecting to shore power, ships can minimize emissions while in port, contributing to better air quality and aligning with sustainability goals. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the cruise industry to adopt greener technologies and practices, which is increasingly important as environmental regulations tighten and consumer demand for sustainable travel options grows.
What's Next?
The New York City Economic Development Corporation is investing in further shore power upgrades and projects to ensure the cruise industry's future in the city is sustainable and competitive. This includes plans for the Brooklyn Marine Terminal and a master plan for the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. As more ports and cruise lines adopt shore power, the industry is likely to see a shift towards more environmentally friendly operations.
