What's Happening?
Vantor, previously known as Maxar Intelligence, has been awarded a contract by the Space Force to provide in-space observations and analysis. This initiative aims to enhance the tracking of high-interest
objects in space, particularly those in blind spots not visible from ground-based sensors. Vantor will utilize its existing satellites, which are capable of non-Earth imaging, to deliver detailed information on the location, velocity, attitude, and maneuvers of these objects. The company plans to collect up to 1,000 non-Earth imaging images daily by 2026, using inertial systems to reposition satellites without burning fuel.
Why It's Important?
The contract with Vantor represents a significant advancement in the Department of Defense's strategy for space monitoring. By improving the ability to track objects in space, the Space Force can enhance national security and defense capabilities. This development is crucial for maintaining situational awareness in space, which is increasingly important as more countries and private entities engage in space activities. Vantor's expansion into in-space monitoring could lead to a multi-million dollar business line, reflecting the growing demand for advanced space surveillance technologies.
What's Next?
Vantor's contract with the Space Force is part of a broader trend towards increased in-space monitoring. The company is also involved in other initiatives, such as the Commercial Collision Avoidance Gap Pathfinder program and participation in the Space Development Agency's Tools, Applications, & Processing Lab. These efforts are expected to further enhance domain awareness and contribute to the development of resilient space defense systems.
