What's Happening?
Argentina's Secretary of Nuclear Affairs, Federico Ramos Napoli, has confirmed that the RA-10 nuclear reactor, a multi-purpose research and production reactor with a 30 MW capacity, is scheduled to begin operations in early 2027. This reactor will not
generate electricity but will utilize neutrons from nuclear fission to produce radioisotopes for various applications in health, industry, science, and technology. A primary function of the RA-10 will be the production of medical radioisotopes, including molybdenum-99, which yields technetium-99m for diagnostic imaging, and lutetium-177, used in oncological treatments. The project, developed by the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) with engineering services from Invap Sociedad del Estado, aims to position Argentina as a significant international producer of these isotopes. The government plans to incorporate private investment for an associated production plant while maintaining state control over nuclear policy, regulation, safety, and security.
