What's Happening?
The European Panoptis unmanned maritime surveillance platform, a semi-fixed sea platform, has successfully completed site acceptance tests during sea trials near Greece in late May 2026. This platform is part of a pan-European project funded under the
European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) 2020, with a total cost of EUR19.5 million (USD22.5 million) and a maximum EU contribution of EUR12.8 million. The project spans 42 months, covering study, design, prototyping, and testing phases. The Greek engineering company EMTE leads a consortium of 16 companies from seven EU countries, including participants from Ireland, France, Bulgaria, Spain, Cyprus, and the Netherlands. The platform aims to enhance maritime situational awareness, enable network-centric surveillance, and support the development of advanced AI-enabled defense capabilities.
