A recent study published in the journal Nutrients indicates that a mother's diet during pregnancy can significantly impact her child's weight status by the age of four. Researchers tracked maternal diets throughout pregnancy and observed the children's
development. The study found that increased maternal consumption of fruits and vegetables was associated with a lower likelihood of offspring being overweight or obese at four years old. Conversely, higher maternal intake of commercial fruit juices was linked to increased odds of overweight or obesity in children, though this finding was considered exploratory. The research, conducted in Spain, involved 252 healthy pregnant women and collected data on their dietary habits at 12, 24, and 36 weeks of pregnancy, as well as the weight status of their four-year-old children. The average maternal intake of fruits and vegetables was approximately 119 g/day and 74.5 g/day, respectively, while fruit juice consumption averaged 105 g/day, with natural fruit juice making up 55% of the total.
