A bipartisan group of House members, led by Representative David Valadao (R-Calif.) and Representative Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), has introduced the Rooting Out Mislabeled Agriculture (ROMA) Act. This bill aims to direct the USDA to develop a database
of isotopic signatures for tomatoes used in canned products and tomato paste. The primary concern is the mislabeling of Chinese-grown tomatoes, which may be blended with products from other countries and potentially harvested using forced labor in regions like Xinjiang.
